A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
